Introduction: Dispensing errors related to foods for special medical purposes (FSMPs) can have serious repercussions in the paediatric population with food allergies. A case of a dispensing error of FSMP for infants and children is described in order to identify the causes and propose preventive measures.
Method: Case study analysis, in the field of community pharmacy. Sources of information: prescription and dispensing records.
Results: 1-month-old infant diagnosed with cow's milk protein allergy. A special milk infant formula without milk protein was prescribed, a lactose-free milk was dispensed and administered to the patient, resulting in a non-damage category D error.
Conclusions: Risk management in the professional dispensing of FSMPs is essential to enhance the safety of pediatric patients with food allergies. The case highlights the need for protocols, ongoing training and technological support in community pharmacies.
