Abstract

Introduction: Due to their specific needs, ostomized patients require appropriate pharmaceutical care (PC) to help them effectively manage their condition. This study aims to evaluate the impact of PC on ostomized patients, including an assessment of their willingness to pay for the support received at community pharmacies (CPs).

Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional observational study conducted in a cluster of Andalusian hospitals. It included patients with digestive and/or urinary ostomies who were subsequently attended at CPs. Intervention: PC focused on dispensing and health education at CPs, in accordance with standard practice. Variables: Sociodemographic: sex, age, educational level, economic level. Clinics: cause and type of ostomy. Variables Results: 1) willingness to pay, 2) usefulness of new services offered in CPs and 3) satisfaction with the PC.

Results: About the PC received, the overall experience score was 7.9 (max=10). Regarding the experience with the services provided, in all areas, more than 70% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied, except for product information, where the level of satisfaction was the lowest. More than 58.3% of patients felt that they do not receive adequate help regarding complications in the CP. Patients would agree with the inclusion of new services in the CPs that would help them. 52.6% of patients would be willing to pay to receive adequate care and information.

Conclusions: Patients report low satisfaction with the information provided about products, which highlights the need to promote changes in the pharmaceutical care model during the dispensing.
